He wins Girls Division by four strokes
GRAND BLANC, Mich. — After a final round interrupted by a three hour and thirty-eight minute delay, the Boys Division was decided with a four-hole, sudden-death playoff as Nick Carlson of Hamilton, Mich., defeated Ryan Jahn of Jupiter, Fla. Muni He of Pitt Meadows, British Columbia closed with a 3-under-par 69 to win the Girls Division with a three-day total of 3-over-par 219.
Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Randy Wise Junior Open was a 54-hole stroke play competition played on the par-72 course at Warwick Hills Golf & Country Club. The event featured 72 boys and 24 girls, ages 12-18, from 14 states and two countries. The Boys Division played the course at 7,122 yards, while the Girls Division played the course at 6,024 yards.
Going into the final round tied for seventh, Carlson fired a 3-under-par 69, highlighted by a 50-foot putt for birdie on the par-3 No.9. Carlson and Jahn finished the tournament tied at 2-over-par 218 to force a playoff, which saw Carlson prevail on the fourth playoff hole.
“I was having fun, embracing it and taking it all in,” Carlson said. “I've always dreamed of winning. This win booms my confidence. It is really sweet to win one of these.”
Jahn finished in second at 2-over-par 218, while Will Seger of Jasper, Ind., and Reed Hrynewich of Muskegon, Mich., tied for third at 3-over-par 219. Kyle Meihofer of Valparaiso, Ind., finished alone in fifth with a 7-over-par 223.
In the Girls Division, He captured a six stroke lead during the final round. The China-native returned to Warwick Hills Golf & Country Club after finishing third in last year's tournament. For the final round, He focused on putting, resulting in five birdies for the round.
“The last couple days my putting was off so I practiced a lot after the rounds and today my putting was really working for me,” He said. “This is my first AJGA win and I'm just so proud of myself and happy with how I played. It just really means a lot to me.”
First-round leader Jessica Porvasnik of Hinckley, Ohio, finished in second at 3-over-par 75 for a tournament total of 7-over-par 223. Rounding out the top three was Emily Mills of Farmingdale, N.J., who posted a final-round 4-over-par 76 for a three-day 8-over-par 224.
