Gaylord- When Alex Dombrowski stepped up to the tee box The Top 50 Junior Tour Midwest Championships he was playing for more than winning a tournament. He was playing for his future. Dombrowski is a recent 2012 high school graduate of Gaylord and was offered plenty of college scholarships to play golf but not the right offer and he has decided to forgo college for the year to improve his golf game.  After carding a pair of one under 69's at the Tree Tops Tradition course,  he beat all comers and walked away with medalist honors against a strong field. Not that being from Gaylord was an advantage as he has only played the resort courses a handful of times. After finishing the Randy Wise AJGA Open at Warwick Hills tied for sixth, Dombrowski said the best thing for his game right now is tournament competition. "I need to play as many tournament as possible," he said. "College scouts are signing players right now going as far as the 2014 season. " Top 50 players gave Dombrowski competition. Eight players were within five strokes of his 69 including David Smith of Clarkston.  Being one of two players that carded even par 70's, Smith said that he could improve on his opening round and played well but only one birdie on the par thee 15th could offset three bogeys and he ended up in third place (70-72-142) behind Corey Szmadzinski of Northville who did birdie three seperate par fours on the front side to go three under and briefly led the tournament. Szmadzinski  did bogey three of the next four holes and Dombrowski was in control. Matthew Goldi of Farmington Hills finished (75-72-147) in a tie for 6th place. Kyle Rybicki of While Lake (71-77-148) finished tied for eighth. For the girls, the win was literally won in a blaze.

Blazo Leads the Top 50 Girls
in Points

That is Natalie Blazo.  After trailing in the first round to Jordan DuVall (Grand Rapids), Blazo (77-81-158) overcame the one stroke deficit and outlasted the field with a double and triple bogey. It took her two wacks out of the sand, a chip and a two-put on the 115-yard par three 17th. DuVall had three double bogeys in her round in addition to eight bogeys and her score of 76-84-160 was good for second place.

News and Notes: Austin Alexander won the boys 12 to 15 age group by carding a (76-68-144) and overcame a seven stroke deficit to beat Scott DiFilippo (69-77--146) of Rochester Hills, Michigan. The Top 50 Junior Tour shows Blazo with a commanding lead in points 607-375 over Kathleen Kennedy of West Bloomfield. Tommy Prato of Dearborn has a solid points lead over Matthew Goldi of Farmington Hills. Note: Many college programs do not offer full scholarships to golfers. Even in demand golfers such as Mr. and Ms. Golf do not receive full rides and many get less than 50 percent.
