Is Oakland University a Contender for Michigan PGA Event? With Video

The 17th at Warwick with Press Tents
The 17th at the recent AJGA stop in August
Several names have been bandied about to take the place of the Buick Open that took place for over 50 years at Warwick Hills in Grand Blanc. In the next few weeks I will go over some of the names but it is time to seriously look at Oakland Universities Katke Cousins and the Sharf. By all accounts Indianwood Country Club in Lake Orion did a great job in hosting the US Senior Open and they have the experience of hosting three major USGA events and if they can secure sponsorship, they would me on any short list of potential PGA Tour sites when an opening becomes available on the schedule.

The course is great and so is the infrastructure. Many things have to be considered from parking, spectator views (vistas), a clubhouse to run a tournament, hospitals and evacuation procedures and one other worthy consideration.

A golf course that is worthy of playing and that is where Katke Cousins comes in. Run by Bill Rogers and his fine staff, both the Sharf and Katke are splendid tracks and both have everything in place but the experience of running a big tournament. The course has recently built a new clubhouse and lockerroom and it has recently hosted the Michigan PGA. In the first of several looks at who the winning Michigan course will be down the road, I will take several looks at this issue. Both Steve Brady, the PGA pro at Oakland Hills and Bill Rogers talk about the virtues of Katke Cousins and perhaps the Sharf course.
