Results: Day One of the PRESEASON JUNIOR AT FIELDSTONE Fieldstone Golf Club of Auburn Hills

The results are in. I will not be offering first hand coverage of this tournament due to another commitment. I will have pictures and quotes thanks to the AJGA staff. Plenty of Michigan golfers are doing well. I will be at Oakland Hills on Monday.

Gold and Willis share lead after first round at Preseason Junior at Fieldstone
Smiley shoots 78 to earn three-shot lead at Fieldstone Golf Club of Auburn Hills
AUBURN HILLS, Mich. — Trevor Gold of Eureka, Ill., and Cameron Willis of Eaton, Ohio, both first time AJGA competitors, shot 1-over-par 73 to share the lead after the first round of the Preseason Junior at Fieldstone. Nicole Smiley of Dublin, Ohio, shot a 6-over-par 78 to lead by three strokes in the Girls Division.
Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Preseason Junior at Fieldstone is a 36-hole stroke play competition played on the par-72 course at Fieldstone Golf Club of Auburn Hills. The event featured 62 boys and 21 girls, ages 12-18, from 11 states and Canada. The Boys Division played the course at 6,639 yards while the Girls Division played the course at 5,768 yards.
The Preseason Junior at Fieldstone is one of 12 events held as part of the IMG Golf Academy Preseason Series. The IMG Golf Academy Preseason Series is a series designed specifically for first-time AJGA members or those members who have not yet been accepted to an AJGA Open event in the current calendar year and/or the previous calendar year.
Willis, one of just seven freshmen in the Boys Division, carded a 2-under-par 34 on the front nine after birdying Nos. 1, 4, and 7.
“It feels pretty great to lead my first AJGA event after the first round,” said Willis. “I didn't start off well, but after the second hole, I was able to really play my own game.”
For Gold, whose round included a birdie on No. 5, Sunday's final round is all about maintaining the same attitude and composure he had today.
“Like today, I want to try and keep the ball 15 feet below the hole and have a good look at birdie,” said Gold.
A first round 2-over-par 74 puts Connor Jones of Shelby Township, Mich., one-stroke off the lead. Darnell Ellis of Reynoldsburg, Ohio, shot a 3-over-par 75 to sit in solo fourth place, while Pierce Moling of Kearney, Mo., Matthew Lavery of Peoria, Ill., Austin Alexander of Farmington Hills, Mich., Kevin Duncan of Rocky River, Ohio, Joseph Trim of Tampa, Fla., and Spencer Gillig of Fort Wayne, Ind., shot 4-over-par 76 to share fifth.
In the Girls Division, Smiley, also appearing in her first AJGA, carded a 2-over-par 38 on the front nine and a 4-over-par 40 on the back nine to earn a three-shot lead over the remainder of the field.
“I waited a lot longer than most of my friends to enter an AJGA,” said Smiley. “I wanted to make sure my game was ready, so it feels really good to lead after working hard to get here.”
Haley Kluth of Noblesville, Ind., Pader Her of Lansing, Mich., and Elle Nichols of Okemos, Mich., shot 9-over-par 81 to share second place.
