Duncan and Gold earn co-medalist honors at Preseason Junior at Fieldstone
Fisher earns first AJGA victory at Fieldstone Golf Club of Auburn Hills
AUBURN HILLS, Mich. — Kevin Duncan of Rocky River, Ohio, and Trevor Gold of Eureka, Ill., shot tournament totals of 5-over-par 149 to share medalist honors and earn victories in their first AJGA appearance at the Preseason Junior at Fieldstone. Emma Fisher of Bloomington, Ind., also a first time AJGA competitor, shot a final round even-par 72 for a tournament total of 11-over-par to earn victory.
Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Preseason Junior at Fieldstone was a 36-hole stroke play competition played on the par-72 course at Fieldstone Golf Club of Auburn Hills. The event featured 62 boys and 21 girls, ages 12-18, from 11 states and Canada. The Boys Division played the course at 6,639 yards while the Girls Division played the course at 5,768 yards.
The Preseason Junior at Fieldstone was one of 12 events held as part of the IMG Golf Academy Preseason Series. The IMG Golf Academy Preseason Series is a series designed specifically for first-time AJGA members or those members who have not yet been accepted to an AJGA Open event in the current calendar year and/or the previous calendar year.
Duncan, who was tied for fifth after the first round, birdied holes two, nine and eleven to shoot a final round 1-over-par 73.
“I knew going into today that I needed to put something around par up to have a chance at winning,” said Duncan. “I just went out there and tried to play my game.”
Gold, who co-lead after the first round, posted a 1-under-par 35 on the front nine before running into trouble on No. 13.
“When I birdied Nos. 15 and 16, it put me back on track,” said Gold. “I didn't change much from yesterday, but the pin locations were tough and I had to think about my approach shots more.”
A tournament total of 6-over-par 150 earned Joseph Trim of Tampa, Fla., solo third place. Darnell Ellis of Reynoldsburg, Ohio, posted a tournament total 7-over-par 151 to finish fourth. James Kneen of White Lake, Mich., and Cameron Willis of Eaton, Ohio, posted totals of 8-over-par 152 to tie for fifth.
In the Girls Division, Fisher started the final round with a birdie on No. 1. Despite an errant drive, the highlight of her round came when she eagled No. 16, holing out after hitting a sand wedge to from the water hazard.
“I didn't know what to expect coming into this weekend,” said Fisher. “Winning my first [AJGA] doesn't even feel real. Knowing what it feels like to win a competition this big, it just feels great.”
Elle Nichols of Okemos, Mich., and Cordelia Chan of Birmingham, Mich., shot tournament totals of 13-over-par 157 to tie for second.
