Michigan Golf Scene

Junior golf tours are getting started all over Michigan and the Oakland Press and myself will keep you abreast of the results as we cover the tournaments or post the results. Posting the results is where we find ourselves from a tournament the previous weekend and the Meijer Junior Players Tour played at the site of this weekends MHSAA Tournament at MSU. In very windy conditions pushing 30 mph, golfers were all over the very tight Big Ten course and scores reflected the conditions. While the course was set up for boys that are in second through fourth grade, they played surprisingly well considering the conditions.  In the boys 7-9 age group the players were putting up some pretty good scores despite the wind. Grabbing first place in this age division was Shawn Sehra from Windsor, ON who shot a 9 hole 40 (+4). Coming in second place right behind Shawn was Neil Zhu from Novi, MI who shot a 47 (+11). Third place in this field went to Marshall, Michigan's Harrison Chapman who shot a 56 (+20). The wind did not play a factor in the girls 7-12 age group either with some excellent scores coming in. The top spot for this age division went to Mikaela Schulz from West Bloomfield, MI who shot a 45 (+9). Just missing the top spot by one stroke was Ariel Chang from Macomb Tws., MI who shot a 46(+10). Snaging the last spot on the podium for this age group was Lauren Kim from Okemos, MI who shot a 48 (+12). The boys 10-12 age division didn't hold anything back on this windy day putting up some great scores. Novi Michigan's Ben Smith was the big winner on the day shooting a 78 (+6). Trailing Ben by six strokes and taking second place home was Brent Trela from Trenton, MI who shot 84 (+12). And by shooting a 86 (+14) Tj Saunby from Chesterfield, MI grabbed the third place trophy for this age division. Moving on to the girls 13-15 age division the good times and good scores kept on rolling. Allyson Geer from Brighton, MI was the big girl on campus today taking home first place by shooting 79 (+7). Putting up a good fight but coming in three strokes behind Allyson was Veronica Haque from Rochester Hills, MI who shot a 82 (+10). With first and second place wrapped up a third place tie in this age division went to Moyea Russell from Lake Orion, MI and Katelin Lawson from Lasalle, ON who both shot an 88 (+16). The largest field of the day was the boys 13-15 age division and they did not disappoint with just three strokes seperating the top three spots. David Szymanski from Grosse Point Park, MI wasn't phased by the wind and went on to shoot 76 (+4) taking home first place in this age division. Just two small strokes behind David was Zachary Robbins from grand Rapids, MI who finished with 78 (+6) to place second. Just one more stroke represented the seperation between second and third place. Austin Jenner from West Branch, MI shot a 79 (+4) to take hope that third place spot.  Despite the windy weather the kids came out and played some great golf, and seemed good spirited throughout the entire day.
