Observations of Watching AJGA Play at Warwick Hills

Observations from a week at Warwick.
Talia Campbell of Dallas, Texas and Henry Do of Ypsilanti, Michigan were worthy winners at the Randy Wise Jr. Tournament at Warwick Hills.

1. Watching Henry Do golf for parts of all three rounds, was a pleasure watching him play at Warwick Hills. All I know is if Do is ranked 30th on tour going into the tournament I wonder just how good the other 29 golfers are? This young man truly has game and when he was down two shots with one to play he never batted an eyelash. While he had no idea that Michael Nagy mady bogey on 18 Henry Do took care of business. He split the fairway on 18 with a clutch tee shot and then pitched a laser to about three feet for a birdie which he promptly made to force overtime. Then while Nagy went into the trees and had to pitch, Do took the drama out of the tournament and split the fairway and then put it once again about 2 to 3' from the hole and once again made bird. Do now sits 10th in the AJGA rankings.

2. Quality of Depth- On the boys side, there was not much of it based on the Polo rankings. Besides Do, only Beau Titsworth of Ohio is currently ranked in the top 60. Do is now ranked 10th after his win this past week. Saying that, there are plenty of great players who participated. Max Kollin, Francesco Ruffino and Bailey Truesdell are super and so are many others that I didn't mention.  The lack of players on these rankings gives you an idea how deep the quality of junior golf is. One reader said to check other rankings. I will tell you these are connected directly to the AJGA site. They just are not in the top 75. For the girls, this is especially alarming. Talia Campbell of Dallas, Texas the only player among the girls in the top 70 that played last week. Campbell is currently ranked 28th. Ali Cowan, also of Texas is now ranked 111th. Campbell is a load to handle in any circumstances but she finished five strokes ahead of Elisabeth Bernabe of Anaheim Hills, California and 13 strokes ahead of the fourth place finisher and that would be Cowan.

3. Quality of Field- The saying Pure Michigan was certainly pure during the past week. While the field was not nationally ranked by Polo, 11 of the top 12 are from the mitten state and to give you perspective the top 15 found 13 Michigan golfers. Can you imagine if Michiganders could golf nationally if they had all year to sharpen their games?
Here is the list of the top 15.

4. Randy Wise is one hands on sponsor. He helped fund the tournament for the players and was on hand each day to make sure the tournament ran smoothly and I think his money was well spent. I  definitely will consider his vast dealerships the next time I purchase a new or used car and I think that is part of the point.

5. The college scouts were out in droves to watch players. They cannot contact junior until September first but there were there from many Michigan programs. The student athletes acted well and remember college students, while you do need to have 'game' to get into college, you better act well and fit in with your prospective teammates. If you do not, you will not be signed and on top of that you probably should look into a school that is a better fit for you.

6. One Classy Tournament-
The 17th Green has no empty beer cans or rowdy fans but still gives you goosebumps.
The AJGA ran a super tournament. nary a player had a bad word to say about the AJGA and that speaks volumes. Players will travel from around the United States to play for a mediocure organization and the AJGA has thought about everything from activities for players, charities to donate money to, have scholarships for players in need and making sure that everything from tee to green runs as smoothly as possible. Well Done!

PGA Professional Marc White Talks about Shoulder Turn

Marc White
Marc White
Marc White has been teaching the game of golf for 30 years and is a proponent of the classic golf swing. I get nervous when a golf professional tries to pack in too many tips in order to improve your game. I admit that after lessons I usually am on a learning curve trying to integrate the tips into my next round and sacrifice my scores for a round or two before muscle memory kicks in and I improve. Then you get another lesson and the process repeats itself. During this lesson, Marc said that when you are standing over the ball that proper shoulder turn works like this.
First, your legs should not move at all other than the natural movement needed to turn your shoulder. In otherwords, you do not need to sway your legs in order to accomplish this.  Your left shoulder should replace where your right shoulder is and your eyes should be behind the ball as well as your left shoulder which should also be behind the ball. Got that? While there is more to it than that, remember, your left shoulder (for right handed golfers) should replace the right shoulder which is now building torque. During your follow through, the weight transfer should push your left shoulder over your left leg. I promise some pictures next week to illustrate this. My recommendation is to go to the driving range after a lesson and hit a large bucket or two. It is true that this is a snapshot of the golf swing and players build their swing component at a time. Marc is very hands on and works with you with both video on site and with a flip cam to help you during the course of a lesson.

Red Oaks is a Course Where Your Confidence Can Grow

Every golf course has its purpose and Red Oaks as a member of the Oakland County Parks System and when you trek to this course you will not pull out most of your clubs during the nine hole course but you will have fun. Better golfers will have fun at this 2,442 yard  Jerry Matthews designed nine hole course and pull out their irons on 5 par three’s that just keep on coming. Beginning and higher handicap golfers will be challenged by the course working on your iron game where golfing from the longest hole is only 420 yards from the tips and from the middle tees you will have no shot over 396 yards with most much shorter than that.

The first hole plays at 366 yards from the back tees (where this course was reviewed) and appears to be a little longer than that from the tee box. A huge driving range net runs quite a ways down the left side and you can wack it here as the fairway is open and the rough will leave you with an uneven lie if you clip the ball right. Still, a drive of 250 yards will give you a wedge to the green or if you miss your drive you will still be a mid iron away from achieving a birdie or par on this hole. A sand bunker looks to collect errant shots down the right side of the landing area. Yet another huge sand bunker obscures the hole on the right side and you cannot tell where the pin is if it is tucked behind the bunker which it was both times I played this course. The green is undulated and tends to run from back to front. Both times the pin was in front of the bunker so most likely you will have an effort rolling downhill or curving one way or another. This is a good par hole and two very good shots will give you a chance to start one under.

Don't go left on the par three fourth hole. Lots of bunkers, a sloping hill and ob awaits you.
The second hole is one where most golfers will be licking their chops. It plays as a 170 yard par three (152 from the middle tees) and plays slightly downhill. There are bunkers guarding the green but it is very open and the green is huge so hitting it is not a problem. The green is subtly undulated so try to stick it as close as you can. If you miss the  green and go off to the side the grass is cushy so you should have a good shot. The sand bunker is fluffy so you should have a good attempt to blast out and push it close depending on how close to the lip you are.
Moving onto number five, this hole plays to 383 yards and is very deceptive. The hole has  a line of trees that funnel diagonally from the left rough to the fairway but going left will most likely leave you will a second shot as many trees are not mature and you might have a second shot. Go right and you will have a cluster of trees that very well could leave you pitching back to the fairway. The fairway has not been mentioned yet and you can really drive and roll it here with a well placed shot down the low cut prime cut of grass. Bunkers will guard this hole but once you are on, this green rolls fairly slow so you will have to hit your putt but you should be able to get it close or knock it in.

Every course has a number one handicapped hole and number seven has the honors at Red Oaks. It plays as an arching dog leg right. The hole is framed by a huge driving net down the left side of the fairway around the landing zone of this 420 (396) yard par four. There is some trouble left side in the rough and I’m telling you, the longer fescues will take your ball and you most likely not find it although you will not believe it as a playing partner of mine found out. You actually could drive your ball behind the driving net and I did that the second time I played it. How you score that is an unsolved mystery. Go right and you will find some of those same fesccues but it is more open over there and fading it right will not hurt you. Once again, the classic sand bunkers guard the hole on both sides up front and hitting the green in two is no guarantee that you will par this hole as the ball tends to keep rolling as its subtle slope does come into play.

The 9th fairway from the tee box.

The 9th fairway slopes right and there is plenty of hardpan here.
The par four 9th hole is another hole where you feel like you can whale away. The hole plays at 374 yards but playing off of the elevated tee and slightly sloping fairway toward the green will most likely give you your best drive of the day like it did mine. The problem comes where most of the right side of the fairway slopes toward the rough and carries into a series of young pine trees that will alter your second shot and most tee shots run hot into them. The rough is also full of hard pan grass and is absolutely no fun to play out of. Play it down the middle and you will never know about this. Go fairway right center or right side and surely you will experience this. A sand bunker does obscure the pin on the right side where it was on both days of playing this final hole. The green is fairly large but putts do role fairly true here.
Customer Service- 9.5- They have a friendly staff overall and this includes the golf course maintainance people.

Course Markings- 8.0 - Good.  No suggestions on playing the course as for individual holes. Plastic fairway markers and some sprinkler heads were marked.
Conditions -8.0 - Course in good shape. Oakland County courses are always in very good shape. Number nine was the exception. The hard pan was little more than dirt. The areas around the green are always a treat. Few ball marks as golfers help to take good care of it and the  maintainance workers are very nice on the course. Remember golf course owners, they are part of the staff and our interaction with them is as important as the staff at the starters tent and in the pro shop.
Playability 9.5- This is a good scoring track. The course plays different depending on your tee box played. The greens are very readable and there are some subtlties to it. If you need to work on your short game or irons and you want some challenge or play some fun golf games such as skins, this is a good place to do it.
Course Design- 7.5 - Course laid out with the  beginning to average average golfer in mind. For you to get into trouble on this course you will find it in spots such as the 4th hole to the left. It is fair and a good design. It is not the tough track many Oakland County public courses are. It is designed for the beginning  or league golfer that wants to have fun without the stress of having to hit it over long carries, bunkers in the landing areas and so forth.
The bottom line. I give it a 8.0/10.0.The course is enjoyable and allows you to work on your game or play with an inexperienced player where you can have the challenge of hitting plenty irons.

I think if you want a good walk unspoiled with frustration and want a friendly game, this is a good course to have one.

Oakland County always has tournaments, leagues and good deals and I would contact them. Here is the website and you can find the course you want to play.

Repeat Winners at the AJGA at Warwick Hills as Do and Campbell Prevail.

The Randy Wise AJGA junior golf tournament  is well represented with golfers from around the US and has an international contingent. Talia Campbell of Dallas, Texas leads the field with a four shot lead with a score of two over par at the 6,495 yard course at Warwick Hills. Elizabeth Bernabe of Anaheim Hills, California led after round one with a 71 but slipped to a 77 and now chases Campbell along with Muni Lily He of Rancho Santa Fe, California who has the same score. Local golfer Rosalie Shyu of Rochester Hills is a distant ten shots off the torrid pace and her game left her as she fell back in the pack with an 84 and was twenty-four shots off the pace by the day’s end. It took her three strokes to get out of a cluster of bunkers on the par three 8th but did make a tough put to save double bogey. Campbell was clutch making birdie when needed and was smooth in her final round 70 which is two under par.  Elisabeth Bernabe of  Anaheim Hills, California travels the AJGA tour going into her junior year of high school in hopes of attracting both college scouts and to sharpen her skills against top flite competition.  Bernabe  her front nine closed who rolls in a birdie and is now within three strokes after beginning it four behind. He had a tough front nine and now sits eight strokes behind the front running Campbell. Local golfers finished well back in the pack.  While Shyu fell back in the pack Chloe Lawrrie of Swartz Creek shot her best round  finishing with a 76 and was tied for 8th, 17 strokes behind the winner. Usually there is drama down the stretch as Elisabeth Bernabe closed to within three strokes after eight holes but the wheels came off the wagon and she was five down by the finishing holes down the back nine.   U of M bound Lauren Grogan is from Columbus, Ohio but it is go Blue and put together rounds of 78-78-76 and finished 6th with three steady rounds.  Campbell has won this event twice, the first before her sophomore year. This future Fighting Irish golfer loves coming to Warwick Hills. “This is my second year playing at Warwick Hills and I think it is just a fantastic course and it really suits my game extremely close,” said Campbell. Her family repeatedly mentioned that the heat is extreme in Dallas and they love playing in the cooler weather. In the meantime, Campbell must feel ‘really cool’ with her third AJGA victory.

The Randy Wise AJGA  Junior Open at Warwick Hills has many of the top players from around the Midwest and United States and two days of golf produced two different leaders.  If you like the Pure Michigan ad campaign you have a Chamber of Commerce final day as eleven of the twelve final pairings have Michigan golfers competing for the Crystal trophy. Aaron Knutson of Notre Dame Prep was the Division Three State Champion in Michigan and entered this closing round of the tournaments six over  and six shots off the lead. He tried to make a charge but his 78 was strong but was his highest over 54 holes and went backward after posting back to back 75’s. While some golfers fell of the pace, Reed Hrynewich of Muskegon was six shots off the lead entering the final day but was simply outstanding and shot a three under par 69 playing on the same pin placements the PGA pros played on Sunday’s when they were a PGA Tour stop. Michael Nagy of Manistique started his round two behind the leader Bailey Truesdell of Grand Blanc and was sharpening his irons holding his own but faded down the backstretch with bogeys in two of the last three holes and after knocking it close to the pin after a deft iron shot, missed both birdie and par putts to open the door for Henry Do. Max Kollin of Farmington Hills, made his own bid hitting his tee shot into the trees on this par three and made a clutch putt giving his a fist pump to be proud of a sand save on the front nine. Kollin shot an even par on the round and finished fourth but had a double bogey on 17 and was three shots out of the medalist honors. A huge surprise is Francesco Ruffino of Bloomfield Hills. He was only two off the lead entering the third round but was seven over through eight holes  but did stop his bogey barrage. He grinded out a much better back nine but was not playing his A or even B game. Second round leader  Bailey Truesdell of Grand Blanc looked good on the front side and had the field chasing him with nine holes to go but  felt the pressure  and faded down the stretch. His 77 put him in a tie for 5th with Joo-Young Lee of Hilliard Ohio who had the low round of the tournament putting together a four under 68 Unlike the PGA Tour, there are no electronic scoreboards and only the final groups have the traditional Roman Standards. Michael Nagy had no way of knowing that his birdie putt could be lagged for par and you do not want to do this with  Henry Do of Ypsilanti in the group behind you. Do also felt the pressure of the round and bogeyed the 17th and Nagy had no way of knowing this. Do appeared to see his repeat slip away but then came the magic. His split the fairway with his drive and with a mid iron, knocked it just a few feet from the pin. His dart thrilled the gallery and then he made the near tap-in birdie and the match was now tied. Nagy and Do then replayed 18 and Do split the fairway again while Nagy was behind a cluster of trees. Do then knocked it within inches of his first dart and before Nagy could knock it back on the fairway, quite a few busted necks couldn’t believe what they just saw. Nagy finished out his 18th hole and Do finished off off Nagy for his second AJGA win. Both have come at Warwick Hills. His improbable shot came from the inspiration of an unlikely source. “My playing partners. Francesco (Ruffino) and Blaze (Hogan) told me to hang in there, “ said Do. “Make a birdie. That kind of helped me and boosted my confidence. That helped me on 18.” While Do has heard drive for show and putt for dough countless times, in his case his Do(ugh) is in his irons and the gallery at Warwick Hills can attest to that.

Talia Campbell and Bailey Truesdell lead after Day 2 at Warwick Hills AJGA Event

At the Randy Wise Ford AJGA tournament at Warwick Hills in Grand Blanc... round two is considered to be moving day and some of the best junior female players from across the United States are within ten strokes of becoming medalist. After round one... ten golfers had medal scores in the 70's and nine are within six shots of the lead paced by Elizabeth Bernabe from Anaheim Hills California who shot a one over par 73 after eighteen holes of golf and Talia Campbell of Dallas, Texas only one shot off the lead. Local golfers are back in the pack including Rosalie Shyu who put together a 79... six shots off the pace. Bernabe made par on number nine with a testy putt. She shot  77 on the day and now trails the new leader Talia Campbell. Campbell made par on the par three 144 yard 11th and her round of 72 gave her a four shot lead after 36 holes.  The Michigan bound Rosalie Shyu of Rochester Hills, Michigan put together a solid round of 77 and is now  ten strokes behind the leaders. Aya Johnson of Muskegon Mona Shores HS is a junior this year already attracing college scouts and strung together a round of  83 for a two day total of  163 with two prep season of her prep golfing career remaining. Local golfer Kelly Feng... a senior at Troy High had a bump in the road with an opening 85 but rebounded to a 79. Feng was very happy not to have any big numbers and was especially proud of birdying the 17th and 18th holes.

Sarah Dilts of Birmingham had an opening round of 91 but her par on 14 helped her rebound to an 86 for an improvement of five strokes . Her playing partner Macy Hudson of Bloomfield Hills also looked to rebound from a 93 and her par playing alongside Dilts  helped her achieve an 87 but is still well behind the leaders. The new leader is Talia Campbell and she  has four strokes to ice the field going into the final day of the tournament. Elizabeth Bernabe of Anaheim Hills, California led after round one but will have to play catch-up if she is to become the winner of the AJGA Randy Wise Open.  Bernabe  is still within striking distance as she is in a two way tie with Muni Lili He of Rancho Sante Fe, California.  In all... eight golfers had medal scores in the 70's on the very windy at Warwick Hills and seven  are within ten shots of the lead. The tournament runs at Warwick Hills through Thursday and the admission is free.

By Roy J. (Joe)Akers Day 2 (Boys)
At the Randy Wise Ford AJGA tournament at Warwick Hills in Grand Blanc, Henry Do of Ypsilanti has no problem being a front runner as he is the defending champion of the Randy Wise open and leads after day one shooting a 72. His one shot lead over Francesco Ruffino of Bloomfield Hills and Reed Hrynewich of Muskegon are only one shot behind posting first day 73's. Day two is when the pack starts to separate and Max Kollin's solid tee shot on the par three eighth left him leaving with a par as he posts a 74 and finished with a 149... five shots behind the leader. Beau Titsworth of Avon Lake Ohio, is tied for 5th after day one carding a 74 and his par on the third kept the momentum as he added a 76 and is 150... six shots off the lead.  Marcus Robinson and Brandon Barrows will both golf for Rochester Adams next spring and they earned pars on the 16th. Barrows will become a freshman this fall and his 83 left him with a two day total of 166 going into the final day... giving him experience but well off the lead. A pair of Patrick's played the first two days together. Patrick Luther of Novi earned a par on the par three 17th but his 85 put him back in the pack.  Bailey Truesdell of Grand Blanc trumped him rolling in a birdie and he carded a 71 but would it be good enough to overtake Henry Do?
Henry Do was consistent in his scoring was consistent after 36 holes. After his opening round 72... he played steady and earned pars at two and three and shot a one over 73 on the day. His 145 is now good for second place in the tournament but only one shot behind Truesdall for medalist honors. Francesco Ruffino is tied for third with a 146 after carding a second round 73. Blaze Hogan of Big Rapids, Michigan had the early best score of the day at 71 and is only four strokes off the two day lead. "Today I made some putts," said Hogan. I missed some short putts for par but I made a lot of birdie putts. I actually was three under at one point but a couple of bogeys in the end and a couple of long putts for par at the end to save my round for a 71," said Hogan.
In all. 27 golfers shot scores in the 70's down from 36 but the winds blew hard at Warwick Hills and 15 golfers  are within three shots of the lead. Francesco. Round two of the tournament begins tomorrow and this three day tournament concludes on Thursday. Online videos with highlights and interviews are on M I PrepZone.

At the Randy Wise Ford AJGA tournament at Warwick Hills in Grand Blanc, some of the best junior male players are playing for the prestige of winning against some of the best scratch competition in the Midwest. Oakland County is well represented with 42  of the 72 golfers making up the field including defending champion Henry Do of Ypsilanti. Max Kollin of Farmington Hills is the State Medalist in Division one and admits the competition is much tougher in the American Junior Golf Association than local  tournaments. and shot a three over par 75. "We will have to shoot a pretty low number or something and maybe in the sixties or very low seventies to get back into it but anything can happen out here,"  said Kollin. Kollin was not prophetic on this day as he is one of more than a baker's dozen within three shots of the leader, Henry Do of Ypsilanti. Francesco Ruffino had a rollercoaster round but he was jubilant rolling in six birdie putts but had a triple bogey and a few other shots he wanted back. "If you do not hit it in the fairway, it can be a long day, said Ruffino. I was all over everywhere. I had six birdies today, a triple and four bogeys," said Ruffino. It was very up and down. On eighteen, I hit one (shot) right handed, added the left handed junior from Birmingham Seaholm.   Henry Do, the defending Champion from Ypsilanti, Michigan is the leader with an even par 72.  While Warwick Hills is no longer a PGA Tour stop The shot of the day belonged to Adam Decker of Ada, Michigan. He aced the 190 yard 11th hole and despite the hole- in- one, he shot a five over 77. In all. 36 golfers shot scores in the 70's and 15 golfers  are within three shots of the lead. Francesco. Round two of the tournament begins tomorrow and this three day tournament concludes on Thursday. Online videos with highlights and interviews are on M I PrepZone.
