Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Coca-Cola Junior Championship at Boyne Highlands is a 54-hole stroke play competition played on the par-72, Boyne Highlands Resort - Moor Course. The event features 108 boys and 36 girls, ages 12-18, from 18 states and Canada. The Boys Division played the course at 6,823 yards while the Girls Division played the course at 5,977 yards.
Gaines utilized his driver to maximize his position getting to the greens — a facet of his game that paid off on his favorite hole.
“My driver was the best aspect of my day today,” Gaines said. “I hit it really well all day today and it set me up for some good scores. My favorite hole is No. 18 because it's a risk-reward hole. You can either make a big number or eagle it pretty easily — today I made birdie on it.”
In the Boys Division, the race to the finish is on as 11 competitors sit within three strokes of the lead, including four who have carded scores in the red and three who are even. Max Kollin of Farmington Hills, Mich., Nick Hardy of Northbrook, Ill., Ramsey Touchberry of Bradenton, Fla., and Taylor Thompson of Anchorage, Ky., are tied for second place with 1-under-par 36-hole totals of 143. Brian Ohr Jr. of Northbrook, Ill., Raymond Knoll of Naperville, Ill., and A.J. Varekois of Rockford, Mich., are tied for sixth at even-par 144. Other key followers from Oakland County include Jeremy Ball of Bloomfield Hills (78-71), and Brandon Barrows of Lake Orion (78-73).
Carlson was one stroke off the lead heading into the second round of action, and while she struggled to start the day, she finished strongly, posting birdies on three of the last four holes.
“I kind of had a rough start to the day,” Carlson said. “I was two over after six, but I came back on the last four holes and was three under so that helped out a lot. Towards the end I was hitting them really close to the hole and made some good putts.”
Rounding out the top three in the Girls Division are Jessica Porvasnik of Hinckley, Ohio and Carolyn Markley of Maineville, Ohio. Porvasnik carded a 1-under-par 71 for a two-day total of 2-over-par 146, while Markley finished 1-over-par on the day and 3-over-par 147 through 36 holes
