HARBOR SPRINGS, Mich. —After 36 holes of the AJGA Coca-Cola Classic at the Boyne Highlands Moors Course, Kyle Gaines of Oxford held a one shot lead over two golfers but knew he would have to go low to earn his first AJGA title. Instead it was Raymond Knoll
of Naperville, Ill who fired a 4-under-par 68 in the final round to come away with the victory.
Scores of Michigan based players were entered in the 54-hole tournament but Knoll opened with a 76 but put together back-to-back rounds of 68 and his total of 4-under-par 212 was one shot better than Sean Stone of Evansville, Ind. to claim the boys championship. Abbey Carlson of Lake Mary, Fla., concluded the tournament with a third-round score of 1-over-par 73 and tournament total of 2-over-par 218, winning the Girls Division title in a sudden-death playoff on No. 10. Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Coca-Cola Junior Championship at Boyne Highlands was a 54-hole stroke play competition played on the par-72, Boyne Highlands Resort - Moor Course. The event featured 108 boys and 36 girls, ages 12-18, from 18 states and Canada. The Boys Division played the course at 6,823 yards while the Girls Division played the course at 5,977 yards.

Knoll boasted a blemish-free scorecard through the final two rounds,
not suffering a bogey mark since No. 16 in the opening round. His
accuracy through the final round paid off with a birdie on No. 18 to
seal his victory.
“I was just trying to make par and stay even,” Knoll said. “I was
bogey free the last two days. I just played solid golf, hitting
fairways, hitting greens, making birdies when I could and I guess it all
just worked out. I talked to my dad last night and he just said if I
could shoot in the 60's I would be in the hunt, because there were very
few scores in the 60's the last few days so that was my goal.”
Still, MHSAA golfers did well at the tournament. Last year, Max Kollin of Farmington Hills, Mich., finished fourth in this tournament and he improved his position to third
finished third at 2-under-par 214 after posting scores of 72-71-71. Rounding out the top five were Donnie
Trosper of Canton, Mich., and Ramsey Touchberry of Bradenton, Fla.,
with three-day totals of 1-under-par 215. Other notable Michigan players Kyle Gaines who led the first two days of the tournament (70-72-75). His score was extremely respectable but in the AJGA, the training ground for future PGA and LPGA Players, the very best go low to earn the victories. Jeremy Ball of Bloomfield Hills fired scores of 78-71-72 to finish in a tie for 22nd place. Aaron Knutson of Lake Orion finished in a tie for 32nd (72-82-71) and Brandon Barrows, also of Lake Orion put together rounds of 77-73-75 for the same T-32nd place finish.
In the Girls Division, Carlson had a one-stroke lead entering
Thursday's final round, but was given a run for her money as Jordan
Chael carded a 6-under-par 66 — including an ace on the fourth
hole — forcing a sudden-death playoff. Despite struggling on the greens
down the stretch, Carlson was able to count on her putter to get her the
win.
“Going into today I was really nervous,” Carlson said. “I just wanted
to play my game — hit fairways and greens and I did that for most of
the round, but towards the end I kind of had an issue with my putting. I
three-putted the last two greens, so having to go through a playoff
after that was really nervewracking. Going into the playoff I wanted to
hit the fairway, hit the green and make a putt and I did just
that — making a birdie on that hole was just great.”
Taking second place was Jordan Chael of Overland Park, Kan., with a
three-day total of 2-over-par 218. Carolyn Markley of Maineville, Ohio
was third at 5-over-par 221.
