The 2012 All County Boys Golf Team

All-state teams for golf have been coming out for the last month including the coaches, the Oakland Press' Keith Dunlap and now mine. What is a real shame is that for all of the names you put on the list, you always omit some worthy golfers but hopefully they are few and far between.

Division 1 Team
<><><><> <> <><> <><> <> <><> <><> <>
Heading off to Indiana this Fall
Max Kollin (Sr.), North Farmington — Max is simply the best high school golfer in Oakland County without apologies to anyone. Kollin's accolades are simply to lengthy to mention. He won the County and Division 1 State Medalist honors in 2011and had top performances in AJGA tournaments in both 2011 and 2012. Earlier this year he won the Azure Dynamics Invitational and shot a 66 at the Oakland Hills North Course against a very strong field. He has had 3rd place finishes at Boyne in 2011 and 2012 and also at the Randy Wise AJGA Tournament at Warwick Hills. In every tournament, he has beat the best in very strong fields. He will play at Indiana for the Hoosiers this fall. He golfed with fellow and current and former State medalists Zach Preuss, Griffen Smith and Aaron Knutson at Pontiac Country Club in a dream foursome at the County tournament in May.

<><><><> <> <><> <><> <> <><> <><> <>
Friel Will be a Spartan this Fall
Sean Friel (Sr.), Birmingham Brother Rice — Brother Rice pumps out all-state golfers the way Ford Motor punches out new cars and he was the only prep golfer from the county to make the coaches all-state super team. This future Spartan  He averaged just under a 74 in tournaments this year and helped the Warriors to their first state team title in June.

.
Eric Shyu (Sr.), Rochester — Shyu has been a rock for the Falcons golf team during his prep career. Coming from a golfing family, his sister was a golfer for the Falcons last year. Shyu won the OAA Division 1 Medalist Tournament. He finished 7th in the state finals for Division 1 in June and is a terrific academic sporting a 3.8 grade-point average

Lucas Belanger (Sr.), Birmingham Brother Rice — Belanger is another golfer coach Dan Bumpus has been able to count on this season and during his high school career. As a veteran leader  for the Warriors, Belanger carded an average score of just over 76. He will attend Queens University in Charlotte.

Coach Dan Bumpus- Brother Rice- Was captain of the ship for a high school team that has been favored many times to win County or State titles and finally got one. Coach Bump got the 'us' back in his name and getting over the bump makes him a smiling Coach Bumpus. His team is loaded again next year but perhaps not as deep with graduation losses of Belanger and Friel.

Division 2-3-4 Team
Aaron Knutson (Sr.), Pontiac Notre Dame Prep — The Division 3 Champion in 2011 and followed it up as the state runner-up this year. ND Prep finished sixth in the Divison 3 Finals at MSU East in June. He is in the field for the Randy Wise Open at Warwick Hills in August. He has signed to play golf at Detroit Mercy in the fall.

Dave Smith-Everest Christian Academy- Smith made the Division 4 State Finals and played fairly well at MSU West. Coached by his father Dave, Smith will play again for Everest. He is honing his game playing the Top 50 Junior Tour where he has already won at Prestwick Village and had other top ten performances.

Zach Preuss (Sr.), Auburn Hills Oakland Christian — One of the top players in the state in Division 4 the last three years, Preuss followed up winning the individual state title as a sophomore and finishing fourth last year as a junior by recording a third place finish at this year’s state tournament. Preuss helped Oakland Christian stun the County with the Lancers winning the 2011 County Championship and then following up with a team title.  Named first team all-state in Division 4, Preuss had a 76 tournament average and a 39 average in duals. He’ll play in college at Cornerstone University with Tyler Coyne. This lefty has game and hones his game at his families resort up north.
Michael Ray-Sr. Cranbrook. - The top player for Cranbrook this year. He shot 75-71 as Cranbrook was the State Champion in Division 2 this year. It was no lock to be the low shooter for Cranbrook this year. Griffen Smith and Griffen Deogun made it a three horse race on most days.
Griffen Smith Sr. Cranbrook- Smith was the medalist for Division 2 in 2011 but did not have quite the same year this year. He shot 82-72 in the Division 3 Finals and his final day score showed he still has game.

Matt Gump, Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook Kingswood- Coach Gump had a very talented team that did not play to their potential until they got into mid-season form in the regionals and state finals. Gump's squad won the Division 2 title by 27 strokes.
For players with eligibility for 2013, while the top players graduating was an excellent class, the golfers coming back will make for some exciting golf next year.

All
Underclassman Team
Charlie Green (Jr.), Novi Detroit Catholic Central — Green is one of the grinders who puts together solid performances nearly everytime he golfs. His scoring average of a tick over 75 for tournament play.  He did win the Catholic League Medalist honors with a top score of 70 at U of M earlier this year. Charlie, do your really live in Ann Arbor?
Brad Kozinski Jr. Novi- Kozinski came from out of nowhere to help the Wildcats win the team title at Pontiac Country Club in May. His team upset Brother Rice, Catholic Central and others and Kozinski won medalist honors.
Kyle Gaines (Jr.), Birmingham Brother Rice — Kyle Gaines was a nice surprise for Coach Bumpus tis spring. He finished with a 76.2 tournament average  Named first team all-state in Division 1 by the golf coaches, Gaines also had five top-10 finishes and finished sixth individually at the state tournament for the Warriors. His 74-75 in the Division 1 Finals trailed only Friel by one shot. He also finished fourth at the Azure Dynamics Invitational at Oakland Hills North against perhaps the toughest field assembled for high school tournament this year including the state finals.
<><><><> <> <><> <><> <> <><> <><> <>
Kyle Gaines
Are you getting sick of Brother Rice? Well here comes yet another player from the Warriors.
Jeremy Ball (Soph.), Birmingham Brother Rice — Hasn't  Ball heard of a sophmore slump? No way as he was part of the depth that carried the Warriors to a one shot win in the Division One finals where he posted scores of 79 and 74. Named honorable mention all-state in Division 1, Ball had a 75.3 tournament and five top-10 finishes in tournament play this season. .

Alex Waelchli (Jr.) Lake Orion Alex seems to play very well at many tournaments I see him at and he is getting better each year. He did card an 82 at Boulder Pointe during the Regionals this year and perhaps teammate Mason Gorris will put himself on the all-county list next year.
Eric Busa (Jr.), Rochester Adams — I thought the Highlanders would come out of he Regionals this year to make a run at the State Finals in Division 1 but it was not to be. But Busa is poised to make big strides in 2013.  A big reason why Adams won the OAA Red title this year was because of Busa. He was named honorable mention all-state in Division 1. Busa had an average of 76, nine top-10 finishes. He is cleaning up on the Top 50 Junior Tour and has won already this year.
Kyle Rybicki- Jr.- OLSM- Rybicki put together a solid round of 77 for OLSM at the Regionals at Fieldstone in June. He also won against a weak field at Kensington Metropark junior tournament and plays the Top 50 Tour.
Top Freshman "Rookies"
Nick Senkowski (Fr)- Avondale- Senkowski is really coming on for Coach Maley. Rybicki helped the Yellowjackets make the State Regionals at Fieldstone where he put together a round of 78. He is playing on the Top 50 Tour and is currently 12th in points.
Brandon Barrows (Fr.), Rochester Adams - Barrows lives on the edge of Bald Mountain Golf Course where his family operates this 18 hole layout and he simply uses golf clubs as his personal magic wand. He qualifies in multiple amateur tournaments from the USGA to Michigan Amateur and in my estimation has a great chance to be a Mr. Golf candidate before its all said and done. He qualified as an individual for the Division 1 state tournament. He plays the AJGA and will be in with the strong field at the Randy Wise Classic at Warwick Hills in August. His scoring of 74.5 is very low and may just get better. He has qualified for the U.S. Amateur for the second straight year also.

The All Oakland Golf Boys Prep Team

My team will be coming up by this weekend but Keith Dunlap the prep coordinator for the Oakland Press has published his County golf team. Agree or disagree, here they are.

BOYS GOLF: Brother Rice dominates All-County Team
By KEITH DUNLAP- Of The Oakland Press
Lucas Belanger, of Birmingham Brother Rice High School, was one of the key pieces to the Warriors' championship season. (Oakland Press Photo: Vaughn Gurganian)
North Farmington's Max Kollin was among the best in Oakland County this season. (Oakland Press/TIM THOMPSON)
The 2012 boys golf season proved to be about Warriors, literally and figuratively.

It was in a literal sense because the Division 1 crown was captured by the Birmingham Brother Rice Warriors, who won their first state title since 1998 and had five golfers that could’ve been No. 1 players on any other team. It was one of two state titles won in this area this year, as Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook Kingswood won in Division 2.

In a figurative sense, it was about other players who proved to be warriors on the course as well with their outstanding play.

All of those individuals made the cut on this year’s all-county boys golf team, which was selected by the Oakland County High School Golf Coaches Association.

Here is the squad starting with the first team.

Max Kollin (Sr.), North Farmington — Arguably the best player in school history at North Farmington, Kollin had a 72.2 tournament average and 35.8 nine-hole average in being named first team all-state in Division 1. Kollin won the prestigious Azure Dynamics Invitational by shooting a 66 at Oakland Hills North and shot a 67 at Huron Meadows to win the district tournament. He’ll play in college at Indiana.

“What a great player, one that’s really going to be missed,” North Farmington head coach Bruce Sutton said. “He surely has left his mark on North Farmington as he owns every record imaginable that I keep track of.”

Aaron Knutson (Sr.), Pontiac Notre Dame Prep — Will go down as one of the best to ever play at Notre Dame Prep after compiling a terrific career for the Fighting Irish. This year, Knutson finished as the individual state runner-up at the Division 3 tournament after he won it last year. He will play in college at Detroit Mercy. Attempts to obtain stats on the season were unsuccessful.

Sean Friel (Sr.), Birmingham Brother Rice — Another in the fine line of golfers to come out of Brother Rice, Friel was the only county golfer named to the all-state Super Team.

Signed with Michigan State, Friel had eight top-10 finishes, a 73.8 tournament average and a nine-hole average of 39.25. Friel shot a 72 to win the regional at Timber Trace and finished in a tie for fourth at the Division 1 state tournament to help lead the Warriors to the team title.

“Sean capped off a fabulous career with a stellar senior season,” Brother Rice head coach Dan Bumpus said.

Lucas Belanger (Sr.), Birmingham Brother Rice — A veteran leader to be counted on all season for state champion Brother Rice, Belanger finished with a 40.67 nine-hole average and a 76.40 tournament average to go along with four top-10 finishes. He’ll play in college at Queens University in Charlotte.

“Lucas has been a four-year player,” Bumpus said. “His consistent played helped lead us to league, district, regional and state titles.”

Eric Shyu (Sr.), Rochester — The MVP of the Falcons for the last three years, Shyu finished a wonderful career by finishing in a tie for seventh at the Division 1 state tournament. He finished with a 77.3 average in tournaments and also sports a 3.8 grade-point average.

“An absolute gentleman from a great family,” Rochester head coach Paul Marti said. “Eric is modest but very focused and very dedicated. In the four years Eric was on varsity I never heard him complain or blame anyone else for anything in any way or act in a negative manner. Just a wonderful individual who will be missed as a player and a leader.”

Zach Preuss (Sr.), Auburn Hills Oakland Christian — One of the top players in the state in Division 4 the last three years, Preuss followed up winning the individual state title as a sophomore and finishing fourth last year as a junior by recording a third place finish at this year’s state tournament. Named first team all-state in Division 4, Preuss had a 76 tournament average and a 39 average in duals. He’ll play in college at Cornerstone University.

“He has been one of the most consistent golfers in the state through his high school career,” Oakland Christian head coach Randy Johnson said.

Kyle Gaines (Jr.), Birmingham Brother Rice — Gaines had a breakout this season for the Warriors and proved to be as valuable as anyone on the team later in the year. He finished with a 76.2 tournament average and a nine-hole average of 40.2. Named first team all-state in Division 1, Gaines also had five top-10 finishes and finished sixth individually at the state tournament for the Warriors.

“His five top-10 finishes were highlighted by a second place 76 at the Milliken Millworks Invitational at Indianwood and a fourth place 70 at the Azure Dynamics Invitational at Oakland Hills North,” Bumpus said.

Charlie Green (Jr.), Novi Detroit Catholic Central — One of the top golfers in the state who still has a year left, Green was named honorable mention all-state in Division 1 after he had a 75.3 tournament average. He also won the Catholic League title by shooting a 70 at the University of Michigan.

“He was probably overall the best player I had, if not one of the best in the Catholic League,” Catholic Central head coach Bill Hayes said. “He’s truly a leader and an extremely hard worker. He played well all the way through.”

Eric Busa (Jr.), Rochester Adams — A big reason why Adams won the OAA Red title this year was because of Busa, who was named honorable mention all-state in Division 1. Busa had an average of 76, nine top-10 finishes and led the Highlanders in driving accuracy and putting.

“He was very consistent all year,” Adams head coach Dan Picot said. “(He had) nine top-10 scores while having a nagging back injury that held him out of the regional.”

Jeremy Ball (Soph.), Birmingham Brother Rice — Ball followed up a nice freshman season with an even better sophomore season for the Division 1 state champion Warriors. Named honorable mention all-state in Division 1, Ball had a 75.3 tournament average, a 39.80 nine-hole average and five top-10 finishes.

“Jeremy had a wonderful season,” Bumpus said. “Jeremy’s strong play helped propel us to Catholic League, district, regional and state championships.”

Brandon Barrows (Fr.), Rochester Adams — Barrows figured to be an impact freshman and that’s what he was, qualifying individually for the Division 1 state tournament and finishing with a 74.5 tournament average. He has qualified for the U.S. Amateur for the second straight year also.

“He joined our team on May 14 and instantly made a difference,” Picot said. “He had our best average and has great potential to be one of the greatest golfers to ever walk the halls of Rochester Adams.”

Head coach

Matt Gump, Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook Kingswood

The Cranes didn’t always play their best golf throughout the year, but Gump kept his players on track and they delivered when it mattered most, as Cranbrook crushed the field at the Division 2 state tournament to win its first state title since 1999.

Top 50 Tour Crowns Ault and Blazo at Golden Fox

The Top 50 Junior Tour made a pair of stops at The Fox Hills Golden Fox Golf Course to play a qualifier and a one day tournament. While local players cleaned up on qualifying day, Daniel Ault of Lansing snuck in to win medalist honors at the Les Stanford Classic. Ault hasn't played in many Top 50 tournaments but he made this one count with a two over score of 74 at a very tough golf course. With weather nor really a factor as it has in so many playing days this year, Ault's steady round of two birdies and 12 pars simply wore the field down as he bested Jamie Stanton Jr. of Rochester Hills. He nearly matched Ault shot for shot and was only two over after six holes and when his birdie on the 398-yard par four 7th brought him to one over, it looked like Stanton could pull out medalist honors. But he bogeyed the eighth to once again move to two over and four more bogeys on the back nine gave him his second place finish. (A video story on Stanton Jr. back in 2011 is archived online).

The Les Stanford Stop only had two of the top 25 players in points place in the top ten and Matthew Goldi of Farmington Hills had his mind to improve his point total with a strong finish. Goldi came into the tournament ranked in the top five in Tour points and with many of the top 25 sitting this one out, he wanted to put himself in prime position to move up the season ranking list with a top finish. His game plan worked nearly perfectly in the opening holes. He opened with five consecutive pars but then hit a wall with three straight bogeys before a birdie on number nine. A double on number ten moved him to four over and he settled for a tie for second place with Stanton. Local players from the west side claimed most of the other top spots and the leader board and standings is posted below. For the girls, the race was between three girls. Ellen Miller of Beverly Hills, Kelsey McDougall (Canton) and Natalie Blazo (Dearborn). Miller put together an uneven round including six pars and three double bogeys and an 87 was good enough for third place in the tournament. Kelsey McDougal started out very strong and carded six pars on the front side. But then the wheels came off and her ten over par score on the back side brought her to a scoreboard faceoff with Blazo. Her 85 looked pretty good but  Natalie Blazo started off her round with four pars. From there she had two double bogeys and another bogey to go five over. From there, she finished with an 82 and was good for medalist honors. With the win, Blazo has increased her Top 50 lead to a commanding 126 points with just a few tournaments to go in the summer season.
