EAST LANSING, Mich. – Andrew Walker (Battle Creek) fired a two-round total of even-par 143 to win the Boys Division of the inaugural GAM Junior Invitational presented by Manistee National Golf & Resort and The Medalist Golf Club played at Eagle Eye and Hawk Hollow golf courses in East Lansing and Bath. Zaafina Naqvi of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, captured the Girls Division title with a two-round total of 157 (80-77).
The 1st GAM Junior Invitational featured 65 junior golfers, 50 boys and 15 girls, who earned invitations through outstanding play in national, state, and high school competition over the past year. Saturday’s first round was played on the par-72 layout of Eagle Eye Golf Course, while Sunday’s final round was played on holes Nos. 10-27 of Hawk Hollow Golf Course, which played as a par 71.
The 14-year-old Walker entered the final round tied for the lead after firing an even-par 72 on Saturday. He said he had a tough time on his first nine holes of the day, but was able to shift the momentum back in his favor on his second nine.
“After birdieing my second hole, I kind of struggled on the front nine today, shooting two over,” Walker said. “But I birdied the first two holes on the back nine and I was able to finish my round at even par so I was pretty happy about that.”
James Kneen (White Lake) finished in second place with a two-round total of 3-over-par 146. Finishing in a three-way tie for third place at 4-over-par 147 were Devan Schulert (Kingsville, Ontario), Jay Green (Alma), and Andrew Sarokin (Novi).
Naqvi entered the final round as one of four players either tied or within one stroke of the lead. Her final round of 6-over-par 77 in steady rain was good enough to give her a one-shot victory.
“I think the key for me today was just that I was very consistent,” Naqvi said. “I just kept on going, hitting fairways and greens.”
Twelve-year-old Anika Dy (Traverse City) finished in second place with a two-round total of 158. Rounding out the top three was Julia Dean (Brighton) at 160.

Manistee National Golf & Resort
The two par-71 courses at Manistee National Golf & Resort offer a chance to play two very distinctive layouts, Canthooke Valley and Cutters’ Ridge. Each has its own separate personality and different challenges and tests.
The resort is surrounded by the trees of the Manistee National Forest, formerly a famous lumbering area where millions of white pines were cut down to help build the city of Chicago. In memory of that notable history, the courses are named to reflect the heritage of the local timber industry. A “canthooke” is a hooking and pulling tool that tree handlers used to roll logs as they were taken down rivers to the lumber mill. A “cutter” was a lumberjack who felled trees.
The Medalist Golf Club
The Medalist is a championship links-style 4½ star course that has been exquisitely etched out of a landscape of almost 300 acres of rolling wooded land and wetlands. Located just outside historic Marshall in South Central Michigan, the terrain will carry you away in your mind to the state’s northwoods.
In the midst of this scenic location is a championship course created by Michigan’s own Bill Newcomb. His creation is a must-play for the serious golfer who will find intriguing doglegs, split fairways, and wetlands and ponds to carry.
This is a course for all generations to enjoy. With five sets of tees available on each hole, players of every level can enjoy Newcomb’s handiwork.
