HARBOR SPRINGS, Mich. — Kyle Gaines of Oxford, Mich., Reed Hrynewich of Muskegon, Mich., and Ramsey Touchberry of Bradenton, Fla., fired division-low rounds of 2-under-par 70 Tuesday during the opening round of the Coca-Cola Junior Championship at Boyne Highlands. Isabelle Kane of Winnetka, Ill., is the Girls Division leader following the first 18 holes after carding an even-par 72.
Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Coca-Cola Junior Championship at Boyne Highlands is a 54-hole stroke play competition played on the par-72, Boyne Highlands Resort - Moor Course. The event features 108 boys and 36 girls, ages 12-18, from 18 states and Canada. The Boys Division played the course at 6,823 yards while the Girls Division played the course at 5,977 yards.
Gaines' putting proved to be a strong point, allowing him to sink five birdie putts.
Hrynewich started strongly Tuesday morning off the No. 10 tee.
“I had a really great ball striking day,” said Hrynewich. “I got off to a great start today. I was able to hit my approach shot to within four feet for birdie on my first hole, and I also birdied No. 12.”
Touchberry credited his low round to his ability to turn a corner on his front nine.
“I had a bit of a rough start today,” said Touchberry. “I was 4-over-par after my first five holes. I felt like my round was starting to get back on track when I eagled No. 2. I holed out from about 100 yards out in the fairway and I was able to sink some long putts to get back to where I wanted to be.”
In the Boys Division, A.J. Varekois of Rockford, Mich., and Matt Kern of Springboro, Ohio each turned in 1-under-par 71 to round out the division's top five.
Kane secured her spot in the Coca-Cola Junior Championship at Boyne Highlands by earning medalist honors during the Taylormade-adidas Golf Qualifier held Monday.
“Playing in the qualifier definitely helped me coming into today's round,” Kane said. “I had some confidence since I had a good round on Monday [shooting a 2-under-par 70]. Getting to know the speed of the greens during a competitive round helped me for today.”

Abbey Carlson of Lake Mary, Fla., and Kari Bellville of Granger, Ind., are knotted in second place in the Girls Division with matching 18-hole scores of 1-over-par 73.

July 4th Holiday Weekend Golf Specials- Hartland Glen-Oakland County Parks and Bruce Hills

     One of the high points of the 2012 golf season is here and course operators have excellent deals for players. Hartland Glen is celebrating their 40th golf anniversary this week and they have several specials. Some of the specials include a BOGO on Wednesday and Friday afternoons after 3pm and bring a friend and you golf for free. You can split it but the deal is you pay half price.      The Oakland County Parks is having July 4th specials at Glen Oaks, Springfield Oaks and White Lake Oaks golf courses for the special discounted rate of $29 for 18 holes with cart. Seniors, adaptive golfers, active duty military and juniors 17 and under play for just $22.  The courses are a treat to play and have been reviewed here. For the biggest challenge, Springfield Oaks is the choice. For the best scoring rounds, Glen Oaks and the front side at White Lake Oaks is a place that was designed to make birdies. Max Kollin will Attend The Big 10's Indiana Univ.

    



     Just as professional golf tours have Monday qualifiers, so does the American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) and Michigan prep amateurs are crowding the field after today's play. The Boyne Highlands Coca-Cola Championships being held at the Moor course has added eight boys and two girls and Preston Dooley of Novi, and Ryan Puruski of Milan carded one over 73's to finish in a tie for second place. They will be joined by Adam Firavich of Hartland (74) and James Kneen of White Lake (75).

   But medalist honors for the one day qualifier was Varun Chopra of Champaign, Ill., who carded an even-par 72 to head off all challengers. In all, seven of the spots went to Michigan players. James Kneed (75) of White Lake, Spencer Schab (75) of Grand Rapids and Manak Singh (75) of Troy napped the remaining spots coming in at three over par.

Their work is just starting.

With top players from Max Kollin (Farmington Hills-Indiana) Henry Do (Ypsilanti) and many medalists across the MHSAA ranks participating, the buzz saw will start on Tuesday and continue for three days with the tournament concluding after 54 holes of grueling golf.

Decker, Kane earn medalist honors at TaylorMade-adidas Golf Qualifier
8 boys, 2 girls advance to play in Coca-Cola Junior Championship at Boyne Highlands

HARBOR SPRINGS, Mich. — Johnny Decker of Verona, Wis., claimed medalist honors Monday at the TaylorMade-adidas Golf Qualifier for the Coca-Cola Junior Championship at Boyne Highlands with a 1-under-par 71. In the Girls Division, Isabelle Kane of Winnetka, Ill., medaled after shooting 2-under-par 70 at Boyne Highlands Resort - Moor Course.
Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the TaylorMade-adidas Golf Qualifier for the Coca-Cola Junior Championship at Boyne Highlands was an 18-hole stroke play event held at Boyne Highlands Resort - Moor Course. The tournament field featured 76 boys and 24 girls, ages 12-18, from 12 states. The Boys Division played the par-72 course at 6,823 yards, while the Girls Division played the course at 5,977 yards. TaylorMade-adidas Golf Qualifiers give juniors an opportunity to "play their way in" to coinciding AJGA Open tournaments or earn Performance Stars for a future event. The TaylorMade-adidas Golf Qualifier Series offers opportunities for AJGA juniors at approximately 50 AJGA Open events.
Eight competitors in the Boys Division qualified for the Coca-Cola Junior Championship at Boyne Highlands. In the Girls Division, medalist Isabelle Kane and Sarah Kolodzik qualified for the tournament by recording 2-under-par 70 and 6-over par 78, respectively. Kolodzik earned a spot in the tournament following a one-hole playoff.

The Coca-Cola Junior Championship at Boyne Highlands will begin Tuesday with first-round tee times running from 7:30 — 9:09 a.m. and Noon to 1:39 p.m. off the Nos. 1 and 10 tees at Boyne Highlands Resort - Moor Course. The US Senior Open has Volunteer Opportunities and is Helping a Local Charity

     The US Senior Open like all tournament involving pro's across the professional tours, has volunteer opportunities and this suits The Lighthouse of Pontiac just fine. Partnering with both Indianwood and Andiamo's who was chosen as the caterer for the event, needs plenty of people in their food service tents. The who’s who of Michigan prep golf will appear at the American Junior Golf Association (AJGA)  Coca-Cola Junior Championships at Boyne this week.  Players from 2011 Division One Medalist Max Kollin (North Farmington) and Henry Do (pronounced dough) of Ypsilanti highlight a field of players from 20 different states and overseas that will play the Moor course at Boyne Highlands from July 3rd through the fifth.

   The string of accolades following Kollin and Do are tremendous. Kollin also won the 2011 Oakland County Medalists honors and has done well at elite AJGA events finishing in fourth place in this event last year and 4^th at the Randy Wise Open at Warwick Hills in Grand Blanc last August. While he has cooled off this season, Indiana University has signed Kollin to be a Hoosier this fall. Henry Do is also among the players to watch. Do chose not to play high school golf this past spring as he focused on qualifying in amateur events across the country. He won the 2011 AJGA Randy Wise Open coming from behind with one hole to play to erase a two shot lead by Michael Nagy (Manistique)who bogeyed the 18th and then Do won with an iron shot on the same hole that was tapped in for birdie after he hit it just two feet for the victory. Do was the only Michigan player to earn the right to play in the AJGA Junior Players Championship at the TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Verde, Florida.

   Also in the field are three recently crowned 2012 MHSAA Champions.  Nick Carlson (Hamilton) won the Division 2 title over Tyler Polulak (DeWitt) and they are both entered in the field. Sam Weatherhead (Grand Rapids West Catholic) is the Division 3 Champion and he will be joined by Division 4 Champion Ted Rider of Kalamazoo Hackett. In addition, three members of the Birmingham Brother Rice Warriors will compete including Kyle Gaines (Oxford); Lucas Belanger (Clarkston); and Jeremy Ball (Bloomfield Hills).

This 144 player event will also feature Aaron Knutson (Lake Orion) Patrick Luther (Novi) Bailey Truesdell (Grand Blanc) and Brandon Barrows (Lake Orion)and quite a few accomplished prep players who will test their skills at the 6,850 par 72 course. While 66 players from Michigan are entered in the field, Doug Ghim of Arlington Heights, Illinois won this event in 2011. Joey Garber of Petoskey, Michigan won in 2010.
