BOYS GOLF: Stoney Creek, Rochester Adams advance out of regional, qualify for state tournament

County champion Lake Orion falls short of qualifying for third straight year
OXFORD – There was going to be sunshine on a cloudy, cool and wet day for three teams following a Division 1 boys golf regional at Boulder Pointe, and as it turns out, two of those teams feeling warm and happy were from Oakland County.

Stoney Creek and Rochester Adams might not have gotten much of the publicity leading up to Thursday in terms of recognition in the state rankings or significant tournaments won, but both stepped up at the best time possible to qualify for next week’s Division 1 state tournament at Michigan State University’s Forest Akers West.

Stoney Creek shot a score of 305 to earn second place, while Adams grabbed the third and final qualifying spot out of a brutal regional by shooting a 307, three shots ahead of fourth-place Midland Dow.

Traverse City West won the regional with a terrific score of 302.

“We won one tournament at the beginning of the year and then had a few hiccups or bumps in the road,” Stoney Creek head coach Ryan Slade said. “Clearly, deep down I knew they had the ability to go low, and that’s what they did today.”

It was a balanced effort by Stoney Creek, which got a 72 from Spencer Lendzion, a 76 from Richie Ingle, a 78 from Michael Doyle and a 79 from Connor McBride.

Adams had similar depth in terms of quantity of low scores, as no golfer shot higher than 82. Leading the way was senior Eric Busa, shot the second-lowest score of the day by coming in with a 71.

Brandon Barrows shot a 76 and Marcus Robinson and Greg Moran each shot an 80 for the Highlanders.

Adams head coach Dan Picot couldn’t have been happier for Busa, who missed last year’s regional with a back injury and watched helplessly as Adams barely missed out on qualifying.

“Eric has been my No. 1 all year,” Picot said. “He’s been a horse and has averaged in the 70’s all year. Today, he just put together a round. He started off 3-over and he kept battling back and got on a hot streak.”

Rochester took fifth with a score of 312 thanks to a 74 from Michael Busse, and 75 from Mike Murri and a 76 from Scott Difillippo, while it was more heartbreak for county champion and tournament host Lake Orion.

For the third straight year and second consecutive year on its home course, Lake Orion failed to qualify for the state tournament.

The Dragons came in sixth with a total of 314 with a set of solid scores, but totals that weren’t quite good enough to match what others did.

Alex Waelchli shot a 75, Mason Gorris had a 76, Griffin Beeler shot an 81 and Schuyler Werth added and 82 to comprise the four scores that counted for Lake Orion.

The three players on non-qualifying teams to advance to the state tournament and compete individually were Winston Munch of Traverse City Central, who shot a 70 to win medalist, Jack Weller of Swartz Creek (72) and Austin Dieters of Midland Dow (73), who won a playoff on the second hole against Grand Blanc’s Jack Haggin to earn the third and final qualifying spot.
