AJGA Junior All-Stars at Forest Lake Country Club give Michigan golfers a clean sweep

Quite often, Michigan junior golfers have taken a back seat to out of state players who take home the Crystal at the top level of competition in junior golf. That is no longer the case. At Boyne this year, Jacqueline Setas (East Lansing) and Henry Do (Plymouth) took home the championship at the Coca-Cola Championships. Make it two in a row as Allyson Geer (Brighton) and Zachary Rosendale (St. Johns) keep the medalist honors in the Mitten state. With only one championship to go at the Randy Wise Open at Warwick Hills, the following print and video stories will show junior golf is played very well in the Great Lakes state.  Click here for the video espn style recap http://www.michigangolfscene.co/mhsaa-jr.-golf.html

Rosendale claims his first AJGA victory at the Junior All-Star at Forest Lake presented by Tom Holzer Ford
Geer wins the Girls Division in sudden-death playoff at Forest Lake Country Club
BLOOMFIELD HILLS, Mich. —Zachary Rosendale of Saint Johns, Mich., earns the champion title in the Junior All-Star at Forest Lake presented by Tom Holzer Ford after he carded a tournament total of even-par 213. Allyson Geer of Brighton, Mich., tallies a tournament total of 228 to take home her first AJGA victory after two top-three finishes earlier this year.
Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Junior All-Star at Forest Lake presented by Tom Holzer Ford was a 54-hole stroke play competition played on the par-71 course at Forest Lake Country Club. The event featured 71 boys and 22 girls, ages 12-15, from 23 states and three countries. The Boys Division played the course at 6,265 yards while the Girls Division played the course at 5,656 yards.
The Junior All-Star at Forest Lake presented by Tom Holzer Ford is one of 12 events in the Gary Gilchrist Golf Academy Junior All-Star Series. Specifically designed for boys and girls ages 12-15, the Gary Gilchrist Golf Academy Junior All-Star Series presents opportunities for younger players to develop their skills and earn entry into AJGA Open tournaments. The Series concludes with the Nike Golf Junior All-Star Invitational over Columbus Day weekend for winners and top finishers in Gary Gilchrist Golf Academy Junior All-Star Series events.
Rosendale lead the final round by a margin of four strokes until he was challenged by Max Clift of Kitchener, Ontario, on No. 14 when Clift made par and Rosendale doubled bogeyed the hole. By No. 16 the margin had decreased to one stroke when Clift made birdie on No. 15 and Rosendale parred the hole.
“Nos. 14-17 were painful, my mental game wasn’t there,” Rosedale said. “On No. 18 I was blessed to have finished with a par. I’m relieved and excited to have won and can’t wait to play more.”
Austin Hitt of Longwood, Fla., carded a 2-over-par 215 for a second place finish. Clift took third with a 3-over-par 216. Andrew Walker of Battle Creek, Mich., claimed fourth at 4-over-par 217. Tied for fifth were Noah Goodwin of Corinth, Texas, and Ricky Costello of Homer Glen, Ill., at 219.
In the Girls Division, Geer and Katherine Muzi of Walnut, Calif., each finished the round with a tournament total 228 to force a playoff for the champion title. In the playoff, Muzi hit her shot into the bunker left of the hole while Geer stuck her approach shot to 17 feet. Muzi made her bunker shot that landed two feet short of the hole as Geer prepared for an uphill putt for birdie.
“I knew I had to make this putt, I just told myself ‘you’re not going to fall short’” Geer said. “If I putted past the hole, my ball would have rolled 30 feet downhill.”
Geer sunk the putt to end the playoff and claim victory.
Muzi finished in second place and Megan Furtney of South Elgin, Ill., followed in third with a tournament total of 233.
