PGA LPGA Tour Caddies Talk Off the Record

This past fall when Steve Williams was shooting off his mouth about his former employer Tiger Woods he broke the golden rule about putting himself as the main story instead of his former boss, it was seen as taboo by pretty much everyone in the game. Golf Magazine in its January 2012 edition asked caddies their opinions on a wide variety of subjects from PGA professionals cheating to doing the deed with female members of the gallery.
In the case of anonymous caddies spilling the beans on their bosses or other PGA and LPGA bosses, they had plenty of interesting things to say including things we expected such as pay and whose bag they would really like to carry.
Remember when Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player and others said that golfers are all full of integrity and are honest enough to call rules infractions on themselves and this includes times when no one could possibly know but the player might not recognize today’s Tour player.
A whopping 54% of current professional caddies have witnessed at least one incident with another two percent saying no comment. The most common offenses are players who mis mark their golf balls on the greens by a couple of inches. A difference of two inches on a putt less than two feet can be huge and one commenter said that some players do this. Another offense is using the club wedge where a player takes a three iron into the rough to knock the ground down behind their ball and then the player hits a nine iron out. Can you imagine Jack Nicklaus doing that? Another wild card infraction for players is to take drops that are justified in their minds but are not legal. I always thought that PGA Tour rules officials were around to make sure the hanky panky was taken care of but it looks like this is not the case.
One thing that is obvious and confirmed in this poll are which course has the toughest greens to read? We have always heard that Augusta’s greens are very tough to read as they are to be studied rather than read.
A total of 14% of caddies said the greens are collectively the toughest on the PGA Tour. While the percentages may seem low, they are double the total of 8% that the second closest course tallied at four different Tour stops.
Caddies on the PGA Tour said if they could pick one player to caddie for for one tournament it would be for Tiger Woods at the Masters. The total of 46% was far and above the ten percent that Phil Mickelson also tallied at the same tournament.
As for which player-caddie relationship do you admire most, Mickelson and Jim (Bones) Makay finished number one as they earned nearly fifty (46%)of the total. Jim Furyk and Mike (Fluff) Cowan finished second at 12%.
As for the defection of caddie Joe Lacava from Dustin Johnson’s bag, 48% of caddies would have done the same. “ I’m in my 60’s with grandkids. If you caddie for Tiger, you’ll play fewer events and make the same money so I’d chose him,” said one anonymous poll participant.
As for the teaser of players doing the deed with female members in the gallery, the caddies said 52% of the caddies have been either propositioned or went one step further and had a relationship with an admiring fan. While this story may be heresy, caddies say LPGA players sometimes mix business with pleasure and it has left a smile on the faces of more than one card carrying bag puller.

What Metro Detroit Courses Give You the Best Bang for the Buck?

The question above is very subjective and unlike your local art gallery, you might get into a heated discussion. If you do, at least have a beer when having the discussion of which courses are not only excellent to play but have some monetary value for you to play. Sean O. of Beverly Hills has moved into the area and would like a heads up for inviting some friends out to some fun golf courses to play next June. The obvious answer is there are too many to count but I will whittle the list down and invite readers to name their courses with a sentence on why they made that selection.
Some of my choices in no particular order are as follows.

In Oakland County... a great bang for the buck course is Pontiac Country Club. It is only 6,300 yards from the tips but it is valued at $35 or less depending on when you go. The strategy is excellent at this course. It seems that every tree and sand trap is there for a reason. It is the home of the Syron Invitational and also hosts numerous golf outings during the summer and the boys and girls County Championships each spring and fall. I do advise that you call ahead as this course gets very busy.

This picture with the clubhouse in the background is typical of the scenic views you will find.
A second Oakland County course I find enjoyable is Fieldstone in Auburn Hills. Voted as one of the top three course in Southeastern Michigan by the Detroit News, this Arthur Hills design is not overly long but well played tee shots are a must on this 6,400-7,200 yard layout. Poor shots will find the woods or fescues. The service is outstanding and will set you back about $50 to play.

Another Oakland County Course to recommend on a short list is The Sanctuary which is operated by the City of Troy. With its rolling hills and scottish feel,
Golf Courses of Troy MichiganSanctuary will take you for a winding journey where it looks like you will have trouble placing your ball and will hit many of the mounds surrounding the landing areas and green but it simply is not the case. Sanctuary has a golf acadamy, plenty of golf specials including the frequent player special and in my mind is a super course to play. Some of the holes are tight but give it a shot. Eighteen holes of golf will set you back no more than $45 and from the tips plays no more than 6,500 yards.

Among the Metropark courses, all of them are excellent. My personal favorite is Kensington Metropark in Wixom but Indian Springs in Independence Township and Stoney Creek in Macomb County near the Oakland County border are all well maintained. All Metropark courses costs around $26 to play plus a cart.

A final tax payer funded course that I really enjoyed was Springfield Oaks in Springfield Township. (My apologies to Lyon Oaks as I have yet to play it). This course is short but there are several memorable holes. The front nine will be an up and down climb but with the woods on top of you on several holes and beautiful weeping willows among the well maintained course. The cost to play this 6,300 yard course is only $29 and that includes a cart.

For complete course information, check out my course reviews on this blog and also their websites.
If your course was left out and you want to make a case, by all means do it.

Gabby Yurik of Stoney Creek is Miss Golf-Interview Here First

Oakland County is simply home to many of the best golfers in the State of Michigan and the choice yesterday of Gabby Yurik of Stoney Creek follows Francesco Ruffino of Birmingham Seaholm who won the boys honor this past spring. Gabby took the time to speak with Roy J. (Joe) Akers and talks about her season, her Miss Golf Title and her future at MSU and elsewhere.
RJA: Gabby, how did you get involved in the game of golf initially and when did you start to take the sport serious?

GY:  l initially started playing golf because my older brother loved it I always wanted to do whatever he did.  Once I played in my first few tournaments, it became more than a hobby and I wanted to be the best I could possibly be (and beat my brother).
RJA: Did you play on any golf tours to hone your game against competition?

GY: I played in a few Meijer/Powerbilt events back when that was the name  of the tour and some Top50 Jr. Tour  tournaments, but once I was about 14 I got
into bigger events like the Michigan Amateur and what not.

RJA: You are the Champion Medalist for Division One this year. Did you feel going in you were one of the favorites and how did you prepare for the competition?

GY: Going in I felt that it was my tournament to win and that if I prepared correctly no one could beat me.  That's why after playing  one practice round at the Meadows, my dad and I decided to go back and play another to tie up loose ends in strategy and really get the feel.  That wasn't easy because it's three hours to Grand Valley and it basically took up the entire day.  It was absolutely worth it, though, to use that knowledge to my advantage.
RJA: The Stoney Creek golf team was very good as well making the State final at Grand Valley State. What were the team goals going into the season and did you accomplish most of them?
GY:  Our team goal was to prove that we were still the Stoney Creek from last year and we could beat anyone.  We never accomplished our ultimate goal of winning the State Championship but not too many teams have that good of chance at it two years in a row.

RJA: How was the recruiting process for you? (Meaning...) did you do the chasing and send letters or did you play in tournaments like the AJGA and they saw how you played?

GY:  Initially, I got a resume together of all my golf accomplishments and scores and sent that out to a few schools I was interested in but once I established a relationship with the coach or had an unofficial visit, it was more on their end than mine.  All I had to do was continue to play well in tournaments, especially in the summer against older and better competition, but I have never played in an AJGA.

RJA: Do you mind saying some of the schools that offered you a scholarship?
GY: Michigan, Ohio State, Oakland University, and Michigan State of course.

RJA: Why Michigan State?

GY:  From the beginning it seemed like their program matched up to my personality very well.  They want athletes and understand that a big part of my success is my athleticism.  It's also great to have an awesome coach like Stacy there who plays in tournaments right along side her players and often times beats them.  Of course, having Christine
Meier there is an added bonus; she's an amazing player and good friend of mine.

RJA: Lexi Thompson is tearing up the LPGA tour when she is playing her best and she is still in high school. Would you like to someday play on the LPGA Tour?
GY:  If I get my game to the point where I think I can do well on the tour I will definitely look into that opportunity, but I take my academics very seriously as well and I'm looking for a career in either business or law at the moment.  My goals are always changing, though, so you never know.

Congratulations to Gabby and the Stoney Creek community.

Greg Norman on Tiger Woods is as Relevant as the Wright Brothers are to Flights to Mars

Now I know that everyone is entittled to their opinion but Greg Norman pretty much is banging a drum with Tiger Woods name mounted on either side of it and to what purpose?

Greg Norman

Greg Norman was relevant as a golfer when Bill Clinton was in office and we are talking first term Bill Clinton. We have not heard a lot from him in quite awhile and if you are in his radar you probably wish he would crawl back in his gopher hole and let Bill Murray find him. Not only does he think Tiger will no longer win a major (many people think he won't). Norman said in an interview with Golf Magazine (November, 2011) that "he (Tiger) has a hard time being a person. Happiness can only come from within and he's the only one who can find that path to happiness." Norman continues on that everyone needs a mentor and that Norman confides in his business partner Bart Collins.
What Norman said about Tiger's swing is nothing new as many people have taken legitimate shots at him.
"I just don't think he's swinging the golf club the way he used to when he won all those major championships," Norman said. "He's a different player out there nowadays. He even looks tied up. He looks more confined. I know what it takes to have freedom in a golf swing and I just don't think he's technically in the right position to do what he used to do."
Norman points out that Woods is a smart guy but that Tiger's not very street smart.  "Because he's been cocooned for his whole life. Ou can be a Harvard graduate, MIT, Yale, Stanford but if you don't understand what the street is all about-- most of the great CEO's and leaders of the world are street smart," said Norman. " They get the temperature , they understand the heartbeat, and having your backup, smart people behind you is the way to go."

Tiger is not the only guy he jabbed at. Both Norman na Lorena Ochoa

a are in competition with Jack Nicklaus and Annika Sorenstam who want to earn the contract to build a couse for Rio De Janeiro for the 2016 summer games. He believes that he and Ochoa are a better tandem and the answer he gives on why he should be given the contract may surprise some. "They're  iconic in their own rights, but Lorena and I are young enough where we can actually--we want to carry that baton and rally push forward. That's a platform that I've been very open about. You have to have the credibility in order to do it, number one, but you also need to have the responsibility that comes with it." What did Norman mean when he said that? I'm sure Jack Nicklaus might like to know.
But it is what Norman said about Tiger that has a ring of truth but why say it? "I can understand the name of a Tiger Woods and his history of what he's done on the golf course," Norman said. "But I pick the guys who I think are ready to get in there and play and have performed to the highest levels leading up to it."

Couples is not known for bumping his gums but did have a rebuttal.
Fred Couples"I have no problem with Greg. He can say whatever he wants, but I'm not really into that. I play golf with my clubs," Couples said after his seven-shot win. "Robert Allenby is his pick, and Aaron Baddeley, and they're Australians and I think they're great picks. But I think I can sit here and say Robert Allenby hasn't won a tournament in 10 years."
Allenby's last PGA Tour win was 10 years ago in the Pennsylvania Classic, although he has seven wins since then, including Australian's Triple Crown – The Masters, PGA and Open – in 2005.

It is quite obvious Norman does not watch ESPN all that much as NFL pundit and former Coach Herm Edwards says "you play to win the game." Norman should hope that Tiger makes the team because their might be wiser choices for Couples to pick right now.

Henry Do is Named Second Team AJGA All American

All I know is that if Henry Do of Ypsilanti  is only a second team All American the other golfers on the list must be out of this world. Do is the repeat winner of the Randy Wise Junior Open at Warwick Hills and still has more golf to play on the AJGA. The list of honors for Do is impressive as he was invited to play in The Junior Player Championship at TPC Sawgrass at Ponte Verde Florida and his list of accomplishments this year are impressive. Do can be mentioned in the same sentence as Phil Mickelson as he is the first Champion to repeat as a defending champion since the lefty did the trick in 1987 and 1988.The Ypsilanti native also won the Division 4 MHSAA State Championships, achieved a win at the Michigan Junior Amateur, and a runner-up finish at the AJGA’s Rolex Tournament of Champions. Henry is a junior at Ann Arbor Greenhills, and finished this season No. 21 in the Polo Golf Rankings. The ranking are compiled from teams  made up of 96 junior golfers, ages 13-19, from 24 states and eight foreign countries (Argentina, Colombia, China, France, Japan, Mexico, Thailand, and Trinidad and Tobago).

The prestigous honor has been paved by players currently on the PGA and LPGA Tours. Of the top 10 players in the PGA TOUR’s FedEx Cup, Bill Haas, Webb Simpson, Matt Kuchar, Hunter Mahan, Brandt Snedeker and Chez Reavie each earned Rolex Junior All-America honors during their junior golf careers, while Mahan was Rolex Junior Player of the Year in 1999.

On the LPGA Tour, Paula Creamer, Brittany Lincicome and Cristie Kerr were named Rolex Junior All-Americans as junior golfers before working their way to the top of the pay-for-play ranks. Other notable AJGA alumni who help make up the list of past Rolex Junior All-Americans include Phil Mickelson, Trevor Immelman, Rickie Fowler, Jim Furyk, Bubba Watson, Morgan Pressel, In-Bee Park, Brittany Lang, Alexis Thompson and Vicky Hurst.
